Agar is a Phycocolloid extracted from the red-purple marine algal group (class Rhodophyceae) including Geledium, Pterocladia and Glcilaria. The agar is used as the gelling agent as it remained the firm at the incubation temperatures of bacteria and could not be utilized by microbes.
